Ukraine's war against Russia rages on, but why help it? Think back to your school days. It brings back good memories, and maybe some not so good ones too, like the bullies at break time. They were attacked because they were smaller or just different.
If you were the whipping boy, you ended up feeling very alone, because others, afraid to take your place, didn't dare intervene. If it wasn't you, you were happy not to be the target, but you still felt a little guilty. Well, it's exactly the same with Ukraine. Supporting Ukraine is not just an act of kindness, it's a necessity. Here are three compelling reasons why we must act:
Don't let aggressors go unpunished
First, don't let aggressors go unpunished. Just as in a schoolyard, ignoring aggression only encourages aggressors to continue. If we let this happen without reacting, the acts of aggression will continue and even intensify. By helping Ukraine, we are taking a stand against injustice and sending a clear message: aggression is not and never will be tolerated.
Protecting us from war
Secondly, we avoid the risk of becoming a victim ourselves. If today it's Ukraine that's suffering, tomorrow it could be us. By doing nothing, we expose ourselves to the risk of suffering the same fate. By supporting Ukraine, it's as if we're intervening in the schoolyard, because we're also doing it for our future. The only question is, if the roles were reversed, would the victim help us? Chance is she would, because she knows the importance of justice.
Protecting our family and friends
Lately, to protect our friends and family. Our friends and family are our allies and could also be threatened, because they share our values of freedom and justice. They too could well find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. By helping Ukraine, just as we help our comrades who have been attacked, we are protecting our friends and family.
Thinking ahead: Why help Ukraine in its war against Russia
Helping Ukraine means defending the principles of justice, preventing future risks and protecting ourselves. Just like intervening in the schoolyard to protect the little ones, but on a much larger scale. It's an investment in creating a safer world for us all.
That's the only way to elevate our world and our societies!
